Louis has struggled with depression and addiction; he is an alcoholic. His darkest days were spent in the back of his truck, drunk out of his mind, trying to forget the world. His high point was when Stanton was born. His son gave him the motivation to live again. However, it was a long, hard road to get somewhat sober. Louis still drinks when given the opportunity, but drinking is the last thing on his mind now. Stanton's well-being is Louis's focus; the world ended, and Louis wants to give the best he can for Stanton. The young man hardly had a life to begin with.
